What Is an Ultra Marathon?

Written by Find Your Finish TeamPublished May 19, 20263 min read

An ultra marathon is any race longer than the standard 42.195 km marathon distance. Beyond that single definition, the format varies more than most other race distances: common ultra distances include 50K, 50 miles, 100K and 100 miles, and courses range from road routes to technical mountain trails.

Who ultra running suits

Most ultra runners come to the distance after several marathons, not as a first long-distance race. The demands go beyond raw endurance: pacing over many hours, eating and drinking consistently throughout, managing gear and sometimes navigation, and coping with fatigue that builds over a much longer window than a marathon requires.

How ultra training differs from marathon training

Ultra training typically emphasises time on feet over pure pace, since the goal is sustaining effort for many hours rather than running fast. Back-to-back long runs on consecutive days, common in ultra plans, simulate the accumulated fatigue of race day in a way a single weekly long run doesn't. Nutrition and hydration practice during training becomes as important as the running itself, since what works for a 2-hour effort often fails over 8 or more hours.

How to work toward your first ultra

A 50K is the natural entry point, close enough to marathon distance that existing marathon fitness transfers, while introducing the pacing and fuelling challenges of a longer effort. Most runners spend at least one full marathon training cycle, and ideally a completed marathon or two, before stepping up. If you haven't run a marathon yet, the first half marathon guide and steady progression through the standard distances is the more sensible starting point.

Point of view

Ultra distance categories are still a small share of what's listed on the platform compared to marathon, half marathon and 10K, but the ones that do exist have some of the highest repeat-registration rates we see, the same runners coming back year after year. My honest take is that ultra running attracts a genuinely different kind of commitment than shorter distances, and organizers listing ultra categories should expect a smaller but more loyal field rather than trying to scale it like a mass-participation 10K.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shortest ultra marathon distance?

50 kilometres is generally considered the entry point for ultra distances, since it's the shortest common race distance beyond the standard 42.195 km marathon.

Do I need to run a marathon before attempting an ultra?

It's strongly recommended. Most ultra runners have completed at least one, often several, marathons before stepping up, since ultra training builds on that existing endurance base.

How do runners eat during an ultra marathon?

Through a mix of aid station food, carried gels and snacks, and sometimes real food at longer distances. What works is highly individual and needs practice during training, since digestion changes significantly over many hours of effort.
